Weekly round up

Hey Hive!

As a quick introduction, I’m a born-and-raised Tehachapi local who moved away for a time but found my way back home. Returning has reminded me just how special this place is, and I’m so excited to share all the fun happenings and hidden gems that make our community unique.

There’s something about September in Tehachapi that feels extra magical—warm afternoons, crisp evenings, and of course… apples! I still remember those childhood field trips to the orchards, wandering through rows of trees and tasting the first sweet bites of fall. It’s those little moments that make this season here so nostalgic and worth celebrating. It’s wild to believe fall is a few days away! these days we have many more fall activies and fun ranging from orchard hopping to the famous Apple Festuval!

Here a few places to enjoy apples this season

Easy Apple Pie

Apple Pie

  • 2 cups flour

  • ▢1 cup sugar

  • ▢1 egg yolk

  • ▢1 tsp baking powder

  • ▢1 cup butter melted

  • ▢7-8 apples – sliced cored and peeled. I prefer a crisp, tart apple.

  • ▢Cinnamon probably a tablespoon or two

  • ▢1 1/2 Tbsp sugar or more if you like it sweeter

Instructions

  • Mix together flour, sugar, egg yolk, baking powder

  • Add butter, melted

  • Press 1/2 of dough into a glass pie plate.

  • Being sure you have an even layer on bottom and up the sides of the pie plate. (no holes!)

  • -8 apples – sliced, cored and peeled. I prefer a crisp, tart apple.

  • After pressing 1/2 of pie dough into pie plate, pile apples onto crust.

  • Sprinkle with cinnamon (sorry, no exact measurement – I just sprinkle until it looks like enough, probably a Tablespoon or two) and 1 1/2 Tbsp sugar (or more if you like it sweeter!)

  • Crumble remaining dough on top by breaking it into small pieces.

  • Bake at 350 degrees for about 45 minutes – 1 hour

  • (Time will vary depending on how thick you slice the apples, you want them tender but not mush! I just stick a fork in to see how tender they are.)

Tips & Notes:

  • I like to peel and slice my apples to 1/4 inch thick.

  • Granny Smith apples are my favorite ones to use.

  • Baking time will vary depending on how thick you sliced your apples and how soft you like them. I usually slightly undercook my apples as I don’t like them mushy.

Fall family game

Hide and Go Leaf

Materials: 30 or so fake leaves (we always have these in our decorations, but if you don’t they are super cheap at the craft store)

To play the game, simply give one family member a pile of leaves. We have some old silky fake leaves that worked great, but the ones off the tree in your yard would work fine, too. The selected family member hides all the leaves around your house. Then the other members have to go and find the leaves. You can make the player with the most leaves the winner. Or, take the competition out and just make it a team effort. We also really like to beat the clock.

We recently played this game when 4 friends were over, so we played boys against girls. The boys hid for the girls and the girls for the boys. Then we timed them to see which team could find the leaves faster. Let’s just say there was a lot of friendly banter going on back and forth between the teams. Haha.

We also like to play 52-leaf pick up. (Ya know, like 52-card pick up, except with leaves.) Mom or dad drops a pile of leaves onto the floor (or porch if you have real leaves). Then the children race to see who can pick up the most leaves.

And that’s it! Simple and frugal, just like I promised. You don’t have to “go big” to impress your kids. All they really want is quality time spent together in a fun way. Even my teens think this game is fun.

That’s it for this week.
